Drill Barbarians, Flying Tigers and Hellcats

For the purpose of drill, Air Force organizations are divided into elements, flights, squadrons, groups, and wings.  During BCT each squadron is made up of 5 flights.  In the beginning of BCT, most events are done by flight. It makes it easier for instruction purposes if the group is smaller.

The task of each person is to learn these movements and execute each part exactly as described. Individuals also must learn to adapt their own movements to those of the group. Everyone in the formation must move together on command. Learning how to turn precisely on corners and the correct spacing is one of the first drill movements a basic cadet learns.  While it may seem tedious to have drill learning and practice, this is an important step for the basics.  They will be doing many formations and marching over their four year Academy career.

Drill consists of certain movements by which the flight or squadron is moved in an orderly manner from one formation to another or from one place to another. Standards such as the 24-inch step, cadence of 100 to 120 steps per minute, distance, and interval have been established to ensure movements are executed with order and precision.  This first drill lesson also taught them how to properly salute and execute a precision turn.
