CATM - FLYING TIGERS

**Range Photography Disclaimer

Due to safety restrictions at the shooting range, photographers are required to remain behind a designated yellow safety line and are not permitted to cross into the firing area. As a result, some photographs are taken from the side or other limited angles. These restrictions are in place to ensure the safety of all personnel while still allowing coverage of the training activity.**

During Combat Arms Training and Maintenance (CATM) as part of Basic Cadet Training, members of the Class of 2030 receive hands-on instruction in the safe handling, operation, and maintenance of military firearms. This training develops confidence, discipline, and attention to detail while reinforcing the Air Force Academy's commitment to safety and professionalism. Basic cadets learn fundamental marksmanship skills and gain a greater appreciation for the responsibility that comes with carrying and employing a weapon as a future Air Force or Space Force officer.

As part of the training, basic cadets fire the Air Force Qualification Course (AFQC) using the M18 pistol. Those who earn an expert rating on the M18 AFQC are authorized to wear the U.S. Air Force Small Arms Expert Ribbon.

The M18 is the compact version of the Army's M17 Modular Handgun System and is issued to Security Forces, Special Warfare units, and other personnel based on mission requirements.
